They attach monitoring equipment to patients and collect data on various physiological parameters during sleep. Roles and Responsibilities of a Polysomnographic Technician:
Patient Preparation:
Greet and orient the patient to the sleep center.
Explain the sleep study procedure, ensuring the patient is comfortable and their questions are answered.
Apply and secure the necessary monitoring devices on the patient, such as electrodes, respiratory belts, and oximeters.
Equipment Setup and Maintenance:
Prepare and calibrate equipment required for testing to ensure accurate results.
Maintain and clean equipment regularly to ensure it’s in optimal working condition.
Monitoring and Data Collection:
Observe the patient’s sleep patterns and behaviors throughout the study.
Record physiological data such as brain activity (EEG), eye movement (EOG), muscle activity (EMG), heart rate (ECG), respiratory rates, and blood oxygen levels.
Document any unusual events or disruptions during the sleep study.
